Sleeper bus Hanoi to Hue vs the overnight train, which is actually better?

Doing Hanoi to Hue next week and I keep going back and forth. The sleeper bus is cheaper and the VIP cabins look genuinely comfortable in photos. The overnight train is the classic choice but I have heard mixed things about actually sleeping on it.

Has anyone done both on this route? Which one did you arrive feeling more human on? And is the train really worth it just for the Hai Van Pass bit, or does that happen at some ungodly hour when everyone is asleep anyway?

Price difference is not huge so I will pick whichever is less miserable. Twelve-ish hours either way.
