About to rent a scooter in Da Nang for four days. The shop near our hotel wants to keep my real passport as the deposit, not a copy. I have rented bikes in Thailand and Indonesia before and it was always a copy plus cash, never the actual passport.
Is this normal in Da Nang or should I walk away? They also offered a no-deposit option if I pay for their insurance, which honestly sounded like an upsell. What did you leave as deposit when you rented here?

Do not hand over your actual passport, that is not normal. A copy plus a cash deposit is standard. Some shops try it with tourists, but you can just say no and walk to the next shop. There are plenty of rental places in Da Nang.

Good to know, I felt weird about it. Is a photo of the passport on my phone enough, or do they want a paper copy?

A photo on your phone is usually fine, most shops just want to see it. I always carry a paper copy too, takes two seconds at any print shop. Cash deposit was 2 million dong for mine.
