Recommended Activities for a Stay in Hanoi

Hi! We are a family of two adults and two teen girls, and we’ll be based in the Old Quarter for six nights before moving on to Mai Chau and Ninh Binh. We have already decided against visiting Ha Long or Sapa. We prefer to focus on exploring the city and perhaps take one day excursion outside the city (ideally within an hour’s drive). What specific suggestions do you have for us? 😊 Thank you!

If you time a visit to the ceramic village, you can do a painting (glazing) workshop of premade pieces (instead of making some yourself). If you time it well, it might be fired just in time for you to take home. I am planning to take a 10 year old.

IMO the best thing to do in Hanoi is walk around and see Hanoi – it is the “sight”. If you haven’t traveled in Vietnam much before, you will be shocked at how fascinating and photogenic everything is. Walk, walk, walk- when you are hot/hungry/thirsty/tired stop at the first place you come to with tiny plastic chairs and no one that looks like you, then have what they are having….the cafe/coffee/beer/juice/food culture is amazing and a totally accessible way for you to feel like you are somewhere different to home.

One activity that we did enjoy was to get a 4:30 am Grab to the flower market to catch it before it finishes, then walk back through town as the city is waking up.

We spent 8 nights there, didn’t visit a single paid “site” and were not bored for a second
