Paid 900k for a taxi from Hanoi airport to the Old Quarter, my own fault?

Okay I need to vent and also learn. Landed in Hanoi after a red eye, exhausted, and a friendly guy at arrivals said taxi to Old Quarter, fixed price. I said yes before my brain was fully on.

The meter was covered with a cloth, which should have been my sign to get out, but I just sat there. 900k later I am standing outside my hotel feeling like an idiot. The receptionist told me it should be around 300k.

I know, I know, use Grab, prebook, all the advice I read and then ignored at 6am. Has anyone else done something this dumb on arrival? Tell me I am not the only one so I feel slightly less bad.
