Only have 4 full days in Hanoi and trying to decide if a Ninh Binh day trip is worth it or if it will feel too rushed. Really want to see Trang An. Has anyone done it as a day trip? How early do you need to leave?

Ninh Binh as a day trip is doable but rushed. If you can swing one night there, the early morning boat ride before crowds is worth it.
Local tip: aim for the first Trang An boats around 7:30 if you can leave Hanoi by 6. The big tour buses arrive after 10 and the caves get crowded. Bring cash for the Mua Cave entrance, cards do not work at the gate.

Thanks, the 7:30 tip is gold. Did you book the limo the night before or is it easy to arrange early morning from the Old Quarter? We are staying near Hoan Kiem.
Did exactly this in March and it was fine, not rushed at all. Left Hanoi at 7, Trang An boat around 10, the ride itself is about 2.5 hours. Take route 2 or 3, they go through the best caves and the little temples. Then Mua Cave for sunset, the view from the top is unreal. Back in Hanoi by 8. Skip Bai Dinh though, that is what makes it rushed.

The Mua Cave steps nearly finished me off, 500 of them, but that sunset view was worth every step. Did you also do Tam Coc or just Trang An? We skipped Tam Coc and I am still not sure if that was the right call.
