I have booked a 3-day cruise that departs from Hanoi, however upon completion, my next destination is Tam Coc. Has anyone completed this specific trip, and if so, how did you arrange the onward transport? Please note that my booking only includes the Hanoi-Ha Long transfer service.

Yes, you don’t have to go back to Hanoi. There are direct limousine vans running from Halong to Ninh Binh/Tam Coc after the cruise. You can ask your cruise staff to help with booking, it’s quite common and saves a lot of time.
I just did this – finished the cruise in Lan Ha and arranged a car to take me down to Tam Coc. My hotel, Le Clos du Fil, arranged it and while it wasn’t inexpensive it was fast, comfortable and convenient. The driver was waiting at the cruise line dock when I arrived off the cruise, and dropped me off at the hotel. He took me up to Hanoi several days later as well.
