We are thinking about two days in the Mekong Delta after Saigon, with one night in a Ben Tre homestay. The idea of sleeping on the river, cycling past coconut groves and eating with a local family sounds perfect, but I worry one night will feel like a quick photo stop.
For those who have done it, does one night give you enough time to actually slow down, or do you spend most of it arriving and leaving? We have two kids, 6 and 9, so we cannot pack too much into a single day.
Also, how do people usually get there, bus from Saigon or a private car, and is it easy to arrange a boat trip from the homestay itself? I would rather book the homestay and sort the boat locally than book a big package tour.

We did exactly one night in Ben Tre with our two kids and it felt like just enough, not rushed, but only because we arrived by lunchtime. We cycled in the afternoon, ate with the family, and took a short boat trip the next morning before heading back. If you arrive late in the afternoon, one night would feel like a photo stop, so get there early.

That timing tip is really useful, thanks. How did you get there, bus or private car, and did the homestay arrange the boat trip for you? I would rather sort the boat locally than book a big package.

We took a private car from Saigon, about two hours door to door, and with kids it was worth it over the bus. The homestay arranged the boat the evening we arrived, just a small local boat for a couple of hours, no package tour needed. Tell them when you book that you want a morning boat, and they will have someone ready, it was the easiest part of the whole trip.
