Hi,
Looking for feedback on this itinerary and any other tips that you may have for traveling with kids. We are a family of 4 with 8 year old and 4 year old kid planning a trip to Vietnam and Thailand in June. We are looking to enjoy good food, culture, beaches and nature.
June 1 – June 4 : Bangkok – 4 days
June 4 – June 8 : Hanoi – 5 days
June 9 – June 11: Sapa ( taking overnight bus on 8th)– 3 days
June 12 – June 15 : (take flight from Hanoi to Dong Hoi ) Phong Nhe Ka Bang – 4 days including 1 travel day
June 16 – June 19 : drive from Dong hoi to Danang – 3 days
June 20- 21 : hoi an – 2 days
June 22 – June 26 : (Flight from Danang) Chiang Mai – 4 days
June 27 – July 2 Ko Samui – 5 days
Few questions-
1. Are we spending too many or too less days in any place?
2. We are conflicted about going to Sapa and Phong Nha Ke Bang mainly because getting there is time consuming and not as straight forward. Would you recommend we keep it?
3. Any places that you recommend we add/replace?

May-June is the best time of year for Tam Coc.
The rice fields are golden yellow and the air is clean and clear, unless it’s raining of course.
All the iconic photos from Hang Mua, you’ve probably seen them, with the yellow rice, would have been shot in May-June.
Sapa will give you a much needed break from the heat.
June is very much off-season. You don’t have to plan everything now. You can make it up as you go, even with children.
Take care.
If you skip Sapa, add Ninh Binh and then head onto Dong Hoi/ Phong Nha.
An Bang beach in Hoian is also good.
“2. We are conflicted about going to Sapa and Phong Nha Ke Bang mainly because getting there is time consuming and not as straight forward.”
Yep, Phong Nha is a little time consuming to get to, and in your proposed itinerary, to get from.
Sapa too, but at least you have the option of the night train. Avoid night buses.
Re Ninh Binh vs Phong Nha?
I’d return to Ninh Binh before I returned to Phong Nha.

First of all the flight schedules doesn’t make logical and could trigger unnecessary costs and potentially losing valuable travel time means entering twice into the same country.
Second, your itinerary is heavy on transportation rather than actually spending vacation time.
Third, you are trying to eat buffet to fill up tummy than a special à la cart.
You should revisit your itinerary to make valuable and memorable.
Phong Nha Ke Bang maybe better than Ninh Binh, as not so easy to reach. NB can get packed out with tour groups from Hanoi, as only about 2 hours away.
If you go to Halong Bay, then it is about right, l think. It also depends what time you arrive and leave.
Not been to phong nha ke bang.
Ninh Binh is more about karst hills and boat rides rather than paid fields but there are those as well.
Planning to do day trips to ha long bay and ninh binh from Hanoi. We might skip ninh binh as it looks very similar to phong nha ke bang paddy fields. Maybe we have too many days in Hanoi
Danang plan was beach, dragon bridge, golden bridge and local stuff.
Are you staying in Hanoi 5 days or are you planning some trips outside, such as Halong Bay?
What are you planning to do in .DaNang?
