Hello everyone,

Has anyone recently participated in the 12-day Intrepid Family Tour? I am seeking a small group travel option where my two children (aged 12 and 9) might have other peers to socialize with during the journey. However, I have a few reservations regarding the accommodations utilized—we usually opt for 5-star hotels, yet even their “comfort” tour appears to be 3-4 star at most. Furthermore, details are scarce concerning the class of service on the overnight trains and boats. Any direct, first-hand accounts would be greatly appreciated, particularly your thoughts on whether the social and group benefits of this type of trip sufficiently compensate for a less luxurious experience concerning lodging/amenities.

      @Laura O Hi Laura, I’d be very happy to, though I’m afraid the plans have yet to take shape! I’m thinking ahead to October 2026 for this trip so probably won’t start developing the details until later in the year, especially as it sounds like I can’t do a huge amount of forward planning with an itinerary that involves Hoi An in October.

    It’s not just about it being dry, it could be about whether it’s flooded, or not.

    Or even if Danang or Hue airports are open.

    Would I go?

    If l so desired, l would certainly be prepared to.

    But l would also have a contingency plan.

      @scottj765 Thanks Scott – that’s useful advice.

      How reliable are the 10-day or 7-day forecasts in central Vietnam? If I were to make an outline plan and then revisit it a week or so before the trip with the benefit of forecasts would that give me a stable platform, or is it so unpredictable that I would need to be making decisions while out there on a day-by-day basis?

      Thanks again, Nathan

        @NJSherlock No worries, Nathan.

        “How reliable are the 10-day or 7-day forecasts in central Vietnam?”

        I don’t know, as l gave up looking at them long ago.

        They always told me it was going to rain, and it rarely did.

        But that’s in every day ‘normal’ weather patterns.

        If they forecast a significant tropical storm / typhoon, that’s different, and I’ll look and take notice.

        I would also talk to locals.

    If you want 5 star you should probably book yourself which isn’t difficult or go through a Vietnam guide whi can cater to your needs and book it for you. If you book internal flights you can book business class but the local train is exactly that and no 5 star options unles the tour chooses the tourist trains with a slightly better room options. Intrepid is definitely not a 5 star tour but usually takes you to some of the more authentic parts of vietnam with good quality , hotels in central locations.

      @Shell28 Thanks both, that’s very helpful. I’ve got the details of the hotels and boat and have decided to organise myself. As you say, it’s easy to get around Vietnam, and even using 5*s I’m pricing at around half of Intrepid.

      The challenge looks to be Hoi An and Hue at that time of the year. How realistic is it to get there and have a dry day or two if travelling in the last two weeks of October? Thanks again!
