I wouldn’t even bother with Hoi An except maybe one night to see the lanterns & boats but be prepared to be completely overwhelmed with other tourists. Hoi An is run down and over touristed – a lot like Kuta in Bali? Da Nang looked to be very modern, pretty pristine & beachy but not really authentic Vietnam? A lot of day tours go from there. Hue has our vote all the way; great vibe, authentic Vietnam, located right on the Perfume River where you can cruise on colourful Dragon Boats and, genuinely, so much to see and do. And nice, wide footpaths – not tacky at all. If you love ancient palaces, temples, pagodas, tombs and stunning gardens, Hue is the place to go. A lot of day tours leave from here as well. We stayed at the Senna Hotel – can highly recommend. If you can base yourself at one accommodation, it usually works out a lot cheaper than jumping around and saves a lot of time.
