To be honest it wasn’t that amazing. A lot of views obscured by trees and power lines.
Take the heritage train if you can. Even if you can’t find a seat, there’s a special coach there selling food and you can sit there watch the amazing sea views while enjoying a performance from a Vietnamese band
We’ve done both and enjoyed both. On the train we tried to book the ocean side of the train but because it had been shunted carriage was in reverse, but a lovely local couple swapped with us.
It doesn’t really matter because they sometimes reverse the orientation of the train. We went through the same process and booked the left-side (ocean-side) seats. But the engine was attached to the last car, so the whole train was running backward — our “left-side” seats ended up being on the right.
1, 8, 9, 17 if they’re facing the travel direction
Sit on the left side of the train and make sure you face forward. Views will be to your left as you travel south to DN
I would go through Hai Van Pass by car or motorbike rather than bypass it on the limiting train. If you want to experience the pass.
Left side facing forward
