Ok, relatively simple explanation for Australians travelling to Vietnam: Virtually all bank debit cards will work in ATMs and for card payments at restaurants etc. BUT… some banks may have international transaction fees and terrible exchange rates. The best options are: A fee free debit card account with Macquarie bank (very easy online application, no fees except a local fee at VN ATMs, great exchange rate)
I’m from Australia. I didn’t change SIM cards. Didn’t tell Telstra I was Leaving . I didn’t change bank cards. I didn’t get any injections at a doctor. I didn’t buy a bum bag. I didn’t buy any hand sanitizer. Just make sure you have visa few hundreds Aussie dollars for back up and way you go.
I am going this year. I will take my banks debit and credit cards. I will also take a Wise card. In this way I have a back up incase something goes wrong with any of my cards. I will keep them in separate places e.g – one in a wallet and the other secreted away . . .
Take a Wise card to use, and cc or bankcard as backup, and keep seperate. Bankcard and cc will sting you hard at both ends with fees. Wise won’t.
Highly recommend UP account, has digital and physical cards, no international fees and great exchange rates. Easy to set up online. Benefit of a separate card is the in the event your card may be compromised, you would control how much is in the account that could be accessed as opposed to your normal bank account card.
I take aussie dollars that I think will cover the whole trip and exchange there as I need it. Do have my NAB debit card as back up. But try not to use
Yes, any visa or Mastercard will work
They work. Also ask your bank to give you 2 travel cards. For cash you get much better rates at gold shops.
In some places yr debit card will not work
I live in Ho Chi Minh City and commbank travel card works everywhere
