Main consideration is that bus travel is extremely dangerous. If you have the option to take the train, I’d highly recommend that. Yes, it will be slower, but your chances of actually arriving are far greater. Bus and truck drivers mostly appear to be amphetamine fueled lunatics that constantly take unnecessary risks. They feature very highly in the road fatality statistics in Vietnam. Buses and trucks were involved in around 2500 fatal accidents in the first 7 months of 2025, that figure was said to be well over 3300 by the years end. We ride bikes and know how terrifying they are but even we were surprised by the figures. Not a single train passenger died in Vietnam last year that I’m aware of. 23 level crossing deaths, but no passengers… just something to consider with kids and all.
Overnight bus: sometimes there is no bathroom on the bus or the driver will make you wait until there is a rest stop. This might be an issue with kids. On the train you can walk around and use the toilet any time. On the other hand, going from Ninh Binh to Sapa by train means a connection in Hanoi and an (easy) transfer to minibus in Lo Cai. There may be a wait in Hanoi for the connection.
