Hoi An on a rainy October day, is the old town still worth the trip?

We are based in Da Nang for a week with our two kids and we have one free day pencilled in for Hoi An. Problem is the forecast says rain all day, the proper October kind, not a passing shower.

Is the old town still worth it in the rain, or will we just be dragging two grumpy kids through puddles? I have heard the lanterns look great in wet weather and the crowds thin out, but I also imagine the tailors and the riverside cafes are less fun when you are soaked.

If we go, what is the plan B for a rainy Hoi An day? Any covered markets, museums, or indoor things actually worth doing? And is the road from Da Nang a pain in heavy rain?

We did Hoi An on a rainy day last October and honestly it was one of our favourite days. The crowds vanish, the lanterns reflect on the wet streets, and the tailors are happy to have you since walk-ins dry up. Bring proper rain jackets, not the flimsy ponchos they sell on the corner, and wear sandals you do not mind getting wet. The Japanese covered bridge and the old houses are all covered, so you can duck in and out. The road from Da Nang was fine, just slower, our driver took about 50 minutes.

That is reassuring, thanks. Did you have any issue with flooded streets? I have seen photos of Hoi An underwater and I am trying to figure out if that is a once a year thing or a regular October thing.

The serious flooding is usually a few days a year, not every rainy day. Normal rain just means puddles and wet feet. If the Thu Bon river is high they close some riverside streets, but the old town itself sits a bit higher. Check with your hotel in Da Nang the morning of, they will know if it is a flood day or just a rain day.
