Hi just wondering how many of you have had a Japanese encephalitis vaccine before visiting Vietnam and Cambodia? We are doing the Mekong river cruise , Halong Bay and a visit to an elephant sanctuary. Mixed opinions in the UK – some travel clinics say yes need it , others are very vague !!! Its expensive but more worried about side effects etc ..We go in less than 4xweeks so need to get a move on if having it !!

Not recommended from the UK
I wouldn’t be getting it
No we came from uk
I had it, and I also had the rabies vaccine. I’m a physician and risk-averse when it comes to my health. It is a very rare but very deadly disease, and if it is preventable, then why not? Not many people have side effects, and even less have serious side effects. We had none. Your risk is higher if you are going for a month or more, or spending time in rural areas. But all it takes is one bite, and the recommendations are based on population studies over decades. While your risk if not meeting the criteria for “strong recommendation” is very low, it still exists. I would not want to be that one in a million who gets it.
Good idea, asking a question from unqualified people instead of your doctor.
We did have it for Indonesia as in rural areas for a long period.
Depends on area your visiting. UK friends going N Vietnam and up to rice growing areas have had Japanese Encephalitis vaccines on travel clinic recommendations.
From Canada and we took it but more as a precaution , because it wasn’t necessary. Insurance also covered it.
