Hi! I’m planning a trip to Vietnam in mid‑March. There will be four of us, we’re interested in nature, food, and sightseeing.I’ve attached our current itinerary and would really appreciate your feedback. In particular:Does the itinerary make sense in terms of transport and the number of days in each place?Central Vietnam – what makes the most sense as a base for overnight stays? A few nights in Hoi An and then move to Hue, or the other way around?Central Vietnam – the plan looks quite packed. We haven’t decided exactly what we want to do yet, but I feel the list of activities/places is already too long.North Vietnam – I’m a bit worried about logistics and that this part is too packed. I’m especially unsure about Day 12, where I planned a trip to Ninh Binh and then the night train to Sapa. I’m wondering, for example, if we could leave our backpacks somewhere or freshen up before the night train.Do hotels usually offer luggage storage? That seems like it would be useful in several places. We’ll be traveling with backpacks only.

We skipped Ho Chi Minh because the air quality is so bad and you get the same feel or culture experience as when you’re in Hanoi only less crowded.
If you are landing in HCMC at 19:30, you will be luck to reach the city before 21:30! Immigration queues were horrendous, starting with the chaos of not knowing which queue to get in. Depending which district you are staying in the Ben Nghe Street Food complex was open until midnight.
You can fly from Hue airport to Hanoi, no need to return to Da Nang. Skip the theme park at Ba Na Hills, go to Marble Mountain’s very early as it a massive coach tour destination. Stay in Hoi An but take trips out in the afternoon when the coach hoard day trippers decend. Enjoy it early morning and after 6pm. Have an afternoon at the beach, 5 mins from Hoi An, relax a little. Hai Van pass has some nice views, but nothing like the north. Have a pit stop at Cao Bang beach en route to Hue, its deserted and beautiful.

Our Halong Bay boat operator organised a transfer directly from the port to Ninh Binh so we didn’t have to go back to Hanoi for a night. It was an additional €80 to our boat trip but absolutely worth it in terms of time saving & convenience. We arrived in Ninh Binh at 3pm.
I would skip ba na hills, we went this week and it is a strange tourist trap. The hand bridge is cool but the rest of it is some weird Disneyland rip off!! Hoi An is beautiful spot and would be a great base. Pay the extra to shortcut immigration, it’s worth it. Don’t discount Hanoi, it is a fabulous, fun town. Hue is great, you need at least one full day to go to the imperial citadel and the tombs, find a great private tour guide for this.
