Hello! I am travelling to Vietnam on Thursday and want to print out allergy cards to show my servers while ordering. I am allergic to peanuts, peas, lentils and chickpeas. I know translation apps aren’t perfect, so I wanted to ask here if any revisions are needed to make this clearer.

Lentils and chickpeas are extremely uncommon. I don’t think anyone in Vietnam knows what they are and that would just confuse them. If you’re allergic to those, though, you may want to be careful with other beans, like mung bean (đậu xanh) and red bean (đậu đỏ), which are not common in the West. I’m guessing you know about soy beans as we use a lot of that too.
Make sure you are carrying 2 EpiPens at all times if you are eating street food, cross contamination is going to be the biggest issue.
I’m not sure anyone will take too much notice of whatever you write.
Is it worth including pictures just to be extra careful .
Well I’d be eating in proper restaurants that cater for this. Just because a smaller establishment can not put those ingredients in your dish, doesn’t mean it won’t be contaminated.
One thing I’ve found is that the Vietnamese are very non confrontational, so rather than saying they don’t understand, they will just bring what they think is correct. We didn’t have allergies, so it was not as serious as your situation but still found many things served that we hadn’t expected. No big deal for us, but of course a very big deal for you.
There is so much peanuts in VN food and cooking be careful
Still, safer not to eat local foods. Go for pizzas and other western foods instead. Who knows, the servers might forget to tell the chef, or the chef might forget themselves, cause allergy is not “a thing” there.
For your safety, I suggest eating in big hotel restaurants where servers speak English. Avoid local foods/restaurants. Too risky.
