   I was there on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, going home Thursday. I looked at staying another night and was surprised to see the price for hotels had almost halved which seemed strange as the weekend was coming up. These cheap prices continued over the Saturday and Sunday.

   I then looked at the windy weather site and found that the wind was forecast to be a Force 6 that’s over over 42 km per hour. No one actually said it but I can only imagine that’s the reason people weren’t going to the island and therefore the hotels were knocking the price down.

   The boat back on Thursday was probably less than 20% full, it had been nearly full going out. It was a very lumpy crossing. The boat was like a cross between a dodgem car and a roller coaster, being banged and rolled all the time. Not a very pleasant experience.

   As for the island, the winds at this time of year is East or Northeast and so you get plenty of places that are sheltered. The main town is on a sheltered bay at this time of year so the beach there was fine.

   I cycled around the island and a couple of times I was almost stopped going around a headland being hit by the wind, but then you get around the corner and it was fine.

   I’d certainly say you can go this time of year and have a good time. The weather’s not that hot so it’s up to you if you want to swim.

   The only constraint might be if you haven’t got any sea legs. Of course flying is a much easier but less environmentally friendly option.

   If you want to eat locally priced food then opt for a hotel in town.

   They are generally the cheaper ones. The more mexpensive hotels are often a km or so outside.

   Just choose what suits on booking site. I had a rubbish room, but moved to good one, so you never know. Even before the blow, I reckon less than 50% occupancy. The whole place was pleasantly quiet.

   Don’t miss the museum and prisons, etc. The island isn’t all about the beaches. I spent most of one day seeing it all – not helped by crazy 2 hour lunch break when all the sites are closed. Only 50,000 for the lot for the day.

   We are in Con Dao now and the weather is perfect! There is a breeze but it’s nice. We’ve been swimming in the sea no problem and exploring the island on a moped, the road is excellent 👍 I highly recommend a visit to this island, not commercialised at all, quiet beaches and fantastic food!

   We were there at end of December. Not much rain but very windy indeed! NOT a time for boating tahts for sure. But the beach by the airport is quite protected from the wind and the loveliest area really. We rod a moto all around the island.

   I’ve booked a trip to Con Dao for a week and mid January and was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect weather wise? I’ve read some articles online saying it’s the best time to visit and others saying to not even bother due to strong winds.

   I always take what I see on travel sites with a grain of salt as I spent a week in Phu Quoc during peak rainy season and didn’t see rain even once, but some actual insights from fellow travelers would be great.

   Jan is the ideal time for most of the south as the dry season has arrived (may be different this year!) and it’s usually clear blue skies all the way.

   Weather on Con Dao follows it’s own pattern but it should be dry may be windy at that time of year though. Which could impact on beach and activites.

   If Jan is the time you have to visit then go for it. Be aware of Tet though. I don’t think Tet would be a good time to be on the island. Choice is already limited and with people travelling to their hometowns over Tet the choice would be even more limited at this time.
