3 Weeks: April 19, 2026 – Impact of Public Holidays

Hello! We are hoping the knowledgeable members of this forum can assist us with our plans.

We have secured our flights from the UK, arriving on April 19, 2026, and departing on May 8. We land in Ho Chi Minh City and leave from Hanoi. The dates of these flights are fixed.

We have just become aware that our trip coincides with 4 public holidays:

  • Sun 26 Apr: Hung Kings Commemoration Day
  • Mon 27 Apr: Hung Kings Commemoration Holiday
  • Thur 30 Apr: Reunification Day
  • Fri 1 May: Labor Day

Currently, we have 4 nights reserved in HCMC but no other arrangements. We are considering a 2-night cruise in Ha Long Bay, followed by a stay of several days in Hanoi before flying out. We have no concrete plans for the section in the middle.

What critical information should we know about traveling during or near these dates? Are there any specific destinations we should avoid, or alternatively, prioritize visiting? Should we secure accommodation and remain in one location for a prolonged period?

Thank you for your help in advance.

The “Hung Kings” holiday is more of a day off for school / government. You’ll notice little disruption for tourist spots like restaurants, bars, or transportation. That’s also not a time when transportation would be more expensive.

The Apr 30 holiday is more major and may come with increased transportation costs (i.e. flights) due to demand, so just make sure to book well in advance. Hotel prices at tourist destinations (ex. beach area hotels) may also increase due to domestic families going on vacation so also book in advance if you’re heading there. FYI, April 30 holiday this current year was a mess in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 due to the parade and the associated road closures, but this thankfully only lasted a few hours at a time. 2026 is not a major anniversary so I’m not sure they’ll do the same thing. I wouldn’t fret too much, just book ahead.

Book your travel plans- hotels, flights and trains asap as cost will go up significantly around this time otherwise just go with the flow.

If catching train, tickets usually available 6-8 weeks before your travel date.

You can consider adding Ninh Binh in between Halong Bay and Hanoi.
