Ong Lang Beach Phu Quoc Guide: Map & All You Need to Know

Ong Lang Beach Phu Quoc is where I spent the middle stretch of my month on the island, and it’s still the area I’d recommend to most people who want a quiet base. It’s a bay of small coves on the west coast, about 7km north of Duong Dong, with softer sand than Long Beach, calmer water in the northern coves, and a sunset straight out over the sea every evening.

What it isn’t is a beach you just turn up at. The sand is public, but most of the shoreline sits in front of resorts, so getting onto it means knowing the handful of public access points, or paying into a resort beach club.

There’s also no nightlife, very little shopping and not many places to eat that you can walk to. Once you know that, Ong Lang is one of the nicest places on the island to spend a week doing very little.

  • Quick Answer: Ong Lang Beach (Bãi Ông Lang) is a quiet 4km stretch of coves on Phu Quoc’s west coast, 7km and about 15 minutes north of Duong Dong, known for calm water in the northern coves and some of the best sunsets on the island. The beach is public, with free access at the end of the road by Ocean Bay Resort and through beachfront restaurants like Bamboo Restaurant, while resort beach clubs such as Aura at Mövenpick and On the Sand at Mango Bay charge a 500,000 VND food-and-drink deposit for non-guests.
  • Ong Lang Beach basics:
  • Getting onto the beach:
  • Where to eat: Tree House for dinner, Bamboo Restaurant for sunset seafood, Ocean Bar & Grill for the view.
  • Where to stay: Ocean Bay, Mango Bay, Camia and Mövenpick, plus small bungalow places in between.
  • Best time: November to April. From May to October the west coast gets waves and sea lice.

You’ll notice I’ve linked to a few hotels and activities I used or recommend, you can even highlight any text to check prices and book instantly. If you make a booking through them, I receive a small commission, which really helps support the work I do here, at no additional cost to you.

Is Ong Lang Beach Phu Quoc Worth It?

For a quiet base, yes. For a day trip from somewhere else on the island, less so, since getting onto the good stretches mostly means a resort beach club.

The sand is a mix of white and pale gold, fine and soft, and the coves are broken up by rocks, so there are stretches where you can have a beach almost to yourself.

The water in the northern coves is the calmest on this side of the island in the dry season. And the sunset is the reason a lot of people come: the beach faces due west, and evenings here are the best thing about it.

Ong Lang vs Long Beach comes down to what you want from the evening. Long Beach has the restaurants, the bars and the crowds, and Ong Lang has a sunset and a quiet dinner. Khem Beach in the south has whiter sand and clearer water but it’s mostly resort-owned and a long way from everything. I’d choose Ong Lang for a week and Long Beach for a long weekend.

Where Is Ong Lang Beach Phu Quoc, and How to Get There (Map)

Ong Lang Beach is in Ông Lang hamlet, Cửa Dương, which is why addresses read Ong Lang, Phu Quoc, on the west coast about 7km north of Duong Dong. It’s around 15 minutes from town, about half an hour from the airport, 20 minutes from Grand World and the far north, and close to an hour from Sunset Town in the south.

The two roads to know are Lê Thúc Nha, which runs down to the northern resorts, and Đường Dinh Bà, which leads to the southern end by Ocean Bay.

For a map, these are the pins I’d drop, from north to south, so the access points make sense when you get there:

PinWhat it is
Mövenpick / Aura Beach ClubResort beach club at the northern end, 500,000 VND deposit
Eco Beach RestaurantBeachfront restaurant down a long resort driveway
Camia Resort & SpaResort on the beach
Mango Bay (On the Sand) and AncarineEco-resort beach restaurant and a beach bar next to it
Tree HouseRestaurant on Lê Thúc Nha, a short walk inland
Ocean Bar & GrillSunset bar and restaurant on Đường Dinh Bà
Ocean Bay ResortEnd of the road, with public access to the sand
Bamboo RestaurantFamily-run beach restaurant at the southern end

A scooter is the easiest way to get around. Grab works, but the waits get longer the further north you are, and getting one back from a restaurant at the end of a resort driveway at 8pm can take a while.

Is Ong Lang Beach Phu Quoc Public? How to Get Onto the Sand

The beach is public, like all beaches in Vietnam, and you’re free to sit on the sand anywhere. What isn’t public is most of the land in front of it, so the question is where to get through.

The easiest free access is at the very end of the road by Ocean Bay Resort. The road looks as if it stops, but if you walk onto the sand and turn right, the beach runs along in front of the resorts, and you can walk a long way. This is the stretch I used most while I was staying there.

The beachfront restaurants are the other way in: eat or drink at Bamboo Restaurant at the southern end or Eco Beach Restaurant further north and the beach in front is yours for the afternoon.

The resort beach clubs charge non-guests a deposit you spend on food and drink.

Aura Beach Club at Mövenpick

The beach club at the Mövenpick resort at the northern end of the bay, with a big pool and jacuzzi and a good stretch of beach. Non-guests pay a 500,000 VND deposit that goes against food and drink, and sunbeds aren’t guaranteed on a busy day.

The food is mostly European and priced like a resort. For a quiet afternoon by a big pool with a sunset after it, it’s good value.

On the Sand at Mango Bay

Mango Bay’s beach restaurant charges non-guests 500,000 VND per person as a voucher for food and drink, and that includes a sunbed and use of the shower. There’s live music in the evening and the sunset from here is one of the best on the bay.

Next door, Ancarine rents a sunbed for the day at 200,000 VND and does an all-you-can-order breakfast at 260,000 VND, which is the cheaper way to spend a day on this stretch.

Swimming, Snorkeling and When to Go

From November to April the sea at Ong Lang Beach Phu Quoc is calm and clear, and the northern coves are the best swimming on this side of the island. From May to October it’s the wet season on the west coast. The waves pick up, the water gets cloudy after heavy rain, and sea lice turn up, which sting and itch without being dangerous. In those months, the east coast beaches like Sao Beach are the safer swim.

Snorkeling at Ong Lang is modest. There’s some life around the rocks between the coves, and a mask is worth bringing, but it’s no substitute for the boat trips out of An Thới. Mango Bay lends kayaks to guests, which is a nice way to get between the coves.

Litter is the other thing to know. There’s some, washed in from the sea and left behind by people on the beach, and the free stretches get more of it than the bits the resorts rake each morning. It’s much less than on the far ends of Sao Beach, and it’s patchy.

Ong Lang Beach Restaurants and Bars

There aren’t many, and most are attached to resorts. These are the ones I’d go to.

Tree House

Tree House Phu Quoc Restaurant and Coffee, on Lê Thúc Nha, open 11am to 9:30pm, is where I ate most often while I was staying at Ong Lang. It’s family-run, with a raised outdoor dining area that catches the breeze and an air-conditioned café downstairs.

The papaya salad, the fish cooked in foil and the lemon tart are the things I’d order. It’s the dinner you don’t have to drive to.

Bamboo Restaurant

Bamboo, on Đường Dinh Bà at the southern end, open 9am to 11pm, is a simple family restaurant with tables on the sand and the best sunset dinner on the bay.

Grilled scallops, squid and tuna are the order, and fresh crab needs ordering about three hours ahead. Getting there in time for the sunset at about 5:30 is the way to do it.

Ocean Bar & Grill

Ocean Bar & Grill, also on Đường Dinh Bà, open 11am to 10pm, has the view, right on the water at sunset, and it gets busy with people taking photos.

It’s pricier than the food deserves and service slows when it’s full, so I’d come for a drink at sunset and eat elsewhere.

Eco Beach Restaurant

Eco Beach Restaurant, at the bottom of a long resort driveway on Lê Thúc Nha, open 10:30am to 10pm, is quiet, by the sea, takes cards and does a proper espresso.

Getting back is the harder part. A Grab out of there in the evening can take a long time, so I’d sort out a ride before ordering dessert.

As for nightlife, there isn’t any. The bars close with the restaurants, and for anything later it’s a ride into Duong Dong.

Where to Stay on Ong Lang Beach

Most of the places to stay in the Ong Lang Phu Quoc area are eco-resorts and bungalows, with a couple of bigger resorts at the northern end.

I stayed at Ocean Bay Resort for the middle of my month, a quiet place with bungalows in big grounds and its own stretch of beach, and I’d book it again.

Mango Bay was one of the first resorts here and is still the standard for the rustic, eco-resort feel.

Camia Resort & Spa and Mövenpick are the larger, more polished options, and Mövenpick is the one with a kids club.

Between them there are smaller bungalow places, Y Nghia and Kingo Retreat among them, which are cheaper and quieter still.

Getting Around From Ong Lang

Ong Lang works best with a scooter. Duong Dong is 15 minutes away, for the night market and the town restaurants, and I rode in every few days for exactly that. The north of the island is close too: Grand World, the beaches at Gành Dầu, and the pepper farm at Cửa Cạn, which is only a few minutes away and the nicest small visit near Ong Lang.

Without a scooter, Grab covers all of it, with longer waits in the evening. The south, Sunset Town and the cable car, is close to an hour each way, so that’s a day trip, and on the day I’d want back in time to catch the sunset from Bamboo.
