Hi just wondering how many of you have had a Japanese encephalitis vaccine before visiting Vietnam and Cambodia? We are doing the Mekong river cruise , Halong Bay and a visit to an elephant sanctuary. Mixed opinions in the UK – some travel clinics say yes need it , others are very vague !!! Its expensive but more worried about side effects etc ..We go in less than 4xweeks so need to get a move on if having it !!

As always, the best defence against mosquito born diseases is cover up and use repellent. It’s not just JEV that you need to worry about, Dengue is at the top of the list, followed by Zika and Chikungunya and good old malaria. Clothing and repellent is the only thing that will offer protection from all of them.
We got it. Even though the risk of getting it is low, to me the consequences are not worth that small risk. Our insurance fully covered the cost so there really was no reason not to. None of us (including our 4 yo) had any side effects.
My travel nurse said I only needed it if I planned to spend extended time in rural areas. I just got tetanus updated, typhoid, and hep a+b. If you don’t want to get it and/or dengue though, they are much cheaper over here.
I have just come back last week, I didn’t have that vaccine, we were advised that we didn’t need it from the travel clinic we spoke to too.

Yes I got it, because although it’s rare there’s apparently no cure. I think it’s advised if you plan to travel to Southeast Asia for more than one month, or if you go to high risk areas. I was out there for five months, and I ended up in rice paddies and trekking through the rainforest. There were no side effects for me.
Typhoid plus Hep A because of contaminated water.
I was in HCM volunteering and the Mekong delta a few weeks ago. If you are a cautious type in life, risk averse, then fill yer boots with vaccines but I like most people I spoke to didn’t have anything specific.
