Two thoughts on finances.First, it looks as if I will be taking the advice many of you have given: acquire Dong in country. My spouse and I have accounts at three different (U.S.) financial institutions and none of them can sell us the currency. Problem solved-ish.Second, though most of my usual bills are paid automatically, I pay my credit cards as they come due. Because I will be in Vietnam for an entire month, this means I’ll have to pay while there. Should I trust the local wi-fi, or just use my cell data plan to interact with my bank? Or maybe just pay the interest penalty and pay when we return?

Wi-Fi is good in the city and most coffee shops. Instead of using cash only download the Moreta Pay App on your phones. It links to your card via plaid and allows you to pay pretty much everywhere/everyone via QR code which is nice so you’re not carrying a bunch of cash around and the confusion of all zeros.*I’m American as well this is my 2nd trip to Vietnam (Danang, Hoi An, HCMC).
Do you have T Mobile?
You will have wifi at your hotel or homestay or Airbnb type place. Use a VPN and pay your bills. Your bank or CC app or website should have robust security.
Use a vpn and don’t use WiFi.
Please, never us public Wifi whether in your own country or overseas unless you are using a VPN. Even then it is not foolproof.
Are you not able to schedule the pay date in advance? That would solve your issue. We do this frequently. You can schedule the payment to be delivered in advance to cover the due date while away. No need to worry to mess with it while traveling
Top up your credit card companies and other utilities before you leave with an estimated amount, plus a bit extra. Then forget about it while traveling. Hassle free holiday
I do all my banking with my mobile phone data connection when away from home – never gad a problem?
I always use the hotels wifi to pay my bills thru my bank app. Never had a problem.
For some reason, I’m always able to tell what my bills are going to be and if there’s any question I pay a little bit extra, but I just pay these before I leave. If I do have to access any financial things, I do it on cellular rather than the Wi-Fi.
