So I see all these posts about all the fakes and dupes in Vietnam.

So I see all these posts about all the fakes and dupes in Vietnam. I’m from New York City the fakes and dupe capital of the world. I’m wondering what makes Vietnam so special for its fakes and dupes? We are leaving to come there on Tuesday. We are getting to Hanoi next week.

The fakes in NYC come from China and vietnam. But the reason why the fakes in Vietnam can be better is that a lot of The Fakes are actually real products but they haven’t passed Authentication because they were made after hours from the factory that makes the real ones. So they are made the same way but haven’t been quality checks so they haven’t got the stamp of approval for sale by the company that has hired the manufacture. There is no authenticated products in Vietnam for cheap, because many of the large retailers that make the products have signed agreements with the Vietnamese government so that things have to get exported out of the country and imported back in which means that when they are sold in Vietnam they are either the same price or more expensive so you won’t find these on sale or at a discount at a local market. So it’s much more not that you have something that has been passed I think people call these like b grades or defect products, it’s the fact that you get something of similar quality for cheaper. But just be careful because many of these places that have the good quality items if you’re not paying attention they will sell you the stuff that’s made out of separate Factory that looks terrible or is made with cheaper quality. Or sometimes they’ll have two different prices they’ll have one for something that’s more genuine and one for something that is definitely made with cheap stuff, it just depends on where you go and how much you want to spend at that point

Nah, Vietnam is the capital lol. Everything is made there so you’ll get it at the best prices. And a lot of it is actually really good quality. Filled a suit case last year and I plan to do it again next month. Check out the Old Quarter weekend night market in Hanoi. Enjoy!

Wait? NY is the fake capital of the world? Get to China, Vietnam, Thailand. It’s a different level. You just have to see it to believe it. Sometimes you’ll see a bag that is so horrible (a purse with awful stitching and spelled CHNEL) and other times they’ll have ones that are decent quality. I don’t see that so much in Hanoi. But it’s still a fun place to shop for all sorts of other items. HCM has some decent markets.

A lot of the factories for big brands are in Vietnam. It is presumed that once they’ve produced enough of an item to fill their contract, they produce extra and sell it for significantly less therefore you’d be getting the exact same as an original, but for much cheaper. Might be true, but in reality a lot of it uses different materials and is of lesser quality – but not everyone cares if it’s real or not. And also most of us don’t live in NYC and likely don’t have as easy access to fakes at home.

There are fakes and then there are duplicates. When you go to Ben Thanh and other places, there are two markets: one that you see in plain sight and one that’s hidden. Some stalls have back rooms that are reserved for special clients. That’s where the good stuff is and they run typically 3-4X the price of the stuff up front but the quality is so much better. Nike, for example, are actual REAL Nike off the mfg floor that for one reason or another didn’t pass the quality check to be sold in Nike retail stores. Often it’s just one stitch is not 100% in line with the other or a flap or feature is not symmetric between the left and the right shoe. Other than that the quality is the same as the REAL thing because it is the REAL thing. To get to the back room you have to know somebody or are repeat customer of that shop. Heck we even had a vendor bring a whole collection of Loewe and Malababa purses to our hotel room for us to shop. It’s all about who you know.
