Hue to Da Nang by train, is the coastal stretch actually scenic from the window?

We have to get from Hue to Da Nang next month and I am torn between the train and a private car over the Hai Van Pass. The car is the classic scenic option, but the train is cheaper and I have heard the coastal section is beautiful too.

Has anyone actually done the Hue to Da Nang train and sat on the right side for the sea views? Which side of the train should we aim for, and does the train slow down enough to enjoy it or does it just fly past?

Practical bit too: is the train usually on time on this stretch, and is it easy to get a taxi at Da Nang station, or should we book a pickup in advance?

Did this train last March and yes, the coastal bit is genuinely stunning. Sit on the right hand side going south from Hue, that is the sea side, and the stretch around Lang Co lagoon is the best part. The train does slow down through there, you get a good 20 minutes of sea views. Book a soft seat, the hard seats are fine for an hour but not great for the full ride.

Perfect, right side going south, noted. Was your train on time? I have heard mixed things about Vietnamese trains running late, and we have a hotel check in Da Nang we do not want to miss.

Ours was about 20 minutes late leaving Hue but made up time on the way, we arrived in Da Nang more or less on schedule. I would not plan a tight connection right after, but a hotel check in is no problem. Taxis at Da Nang station were easy, there is a proper rank outside, just insist on the meter.
