Con Dao: worth the flight for 2-3 days, or better stick to Phu Quoc?

We have 3 spare days after Hoi An and I am debating a detour to Con Dao. The beaches look unreal and the history side, the old prison, sounds genuinely moving. But the flights are pricey and infrequent, which makes me hesitate.

Has anyone done Con Dao recently? Is 2 to 3 days enough, or does the flight schedule eat into it too much? And how does it compare to Phu Quoc these days, is it really that much quieter?

Also practical stuff: can you get around the island easily without a tour, is scooter rental straightforward?

Scooter rental was easy, our guesthouse sorted one for 150k a day, no paperwork drama. The coastal road around the island is beautiful and almost empty. Dam Trau beach near the airport was our favourite, you can watch the planes land right over the beach. Fill up the tank before heading to the far side, there is only one petrol station in town.

We went in March and it was the highlight of our trip. Yes the flights are awkward, there are only a few a day and they are not cheap, but 3 days is enough if you land early on day one. It is SO much quieter than Phu Quoc, almost no big resorts, just small guesthouses and empty beaches. The prison museum took us half a day and it is heavy but important, do not skip it.
