We are in Hoi An for 4 nights and the My Son sunrise tour keeps popping up everywhere. It leaves around 5am and you get to the ruins before the crowds and the heat, which sounds great on paper.
But is it actually worth dragging ourselves out of bed at 5am? Has anyone done the sunrise tour and can compare it with just going later in the morning on your own? I am wondering if the early light is really that much better, or if it is mostly a marketing thing.
Also, how long do you need at the site itself? Half a day back in Hoi An by lunch sounds perfect to me.

We did the sunrise tour and honestly the 5am start was the best part. You walk through the ruins in cool air with mist still in the trees, and the big tour buses roll in around 9 when you are already leaving. The light at 6:30 on the brick towers is genuinely beautiful, not a marketing trick. On your own later in the morning it is hot and crowded, a totally different experience.

That sounds lovely, thank you. Did you book through your hotel or with a tour company in town? And how big was the group? I am hoping it is not one of those 40-person bus situations.

We booked through a small operator on Tran Phu street, 12 people in a minivan. Hotels sell the same tours but mark them up, so walk into an agency and ask. Ours was about 350k per person including the entrance fee and breakfast banh mi on the way back.
