Ben Tre vs My Tho for a Mekong day trip, which one is less touristy?

We only have one free day in HCMC and want to see the Mekong Delta. Every tour company pushes My Tho, but I have read that Ben Tre is quieter and more local.

The problem is most Ben Tre tours seem to be private and cost a lot more. Is the difference actually noticeable, or are both just the same coconut candy and sampan ride in the end?

Has anyone done both and can compare honestly? We would rather pay more for Ben Tre if it is genuinely better.

We did My Tho first and Ben Tre a year later, and Ben Tre is noticeably calmer. My Tho felt like a conveyor belt, bus after bus at the coconut candy place. Ben Tre still has the tourist stops, do not get me wrong, but the bike ride through the villages felt genuinely local.

That is what I suspected. Was the Ben Tre tour much more expensive? The private ones I am seeing are around 1.5 million for two people.

About that, yes. We paid 1.4 million for a private car and boat for two. Worth it for us because we could skip the stops we did not care about. If budget is tight, My Tho group tours are like 300k and still a decent day out, just busier.
