SIM card at the airport vs in town, is the price difference real?

Landing in Hanoi next week and trying to figure out the SIM situation. The airport kiosks seem to charge around 300 to 350k for a tourist SIM with data.

People keep saying you can get the same thing for 100 to 150k at a Viettel shop in town. Is that actually true, or is it one of those tips from 2019 that does not work anymore?

We mostly need data for maps and Grab for two weeks. Is there any catch with the cheap ones, like needing to register with your passport or the data running out in three days? Also, has anyone just used an eSIM instead? The prices I saw online were higher but zero hassle sounded nice after a red eye flight.

I went the lazy route and got an Airalo eSIM before flying. Paid more than the local SIM for sure, but I had data the second we landed and did not have to think about shops or passports at midnight. Worth it after a red eye, I would do it again.

Go to a Viettel shop in town, we paid 150k for 30 days with a ridiculous amount of data. Bring your passport, they register it on the spot, takes ten minutes. The airport price is basically double for the same thing.

Replying to Janet Allan @Janet Allan Do the airport kiosks also need your passport, or is that just the town shops? Wondering if I can just grab one at arrivals and sort it later.

Yes, the airport kiosks ask for your passport too, it is the law here, every SIM gets registered. It takes five minutes, they photocopy it and you are done. If you land late at night and just want data fast, the airport is fine. If you land in the daytime, save the money and do it in town.
