Possibly an unpopular take, but the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai was genuinely the best part of my two weeks in Vietnam.
I booked the four berth soft sleeper and the cabin ended up being me plus a Vietnamese family with the loveliest kid, who shared all their snacks with me. Woke up at 5am to mist hanging over the mountains and it felt like a film.
Yes the beds are firm and yes it rattles, but it beats a six hour bus where you arrive destroyed. Plus you save a night of hotel money.
If you are on the fence, just do it. Book the soft sleeper, bring snacks and earplugs, thank me later.

Completely agree, the overnight train was my favourite part of the whole trip too. One tip: bring snacks and water with you, the stuff they sell on board is limited. And fight for a lower berth, climbing up at 2am is no fun.
