Looking at Sapa homestays and the ones with the big valley views are like double the price of the regular ones in town. Trying to figure out if the view is actually worth it.
My worry is that you pay for the view and then it is foggy the whole time and you are just staring at white. How often is the valley actually visible in late October?
Also practical question, are the view homestays a pain to get to? Some of them look like they are a 20 minute walk up a muddy hill from the road. Fine in daylight, less fine after dinner in the dark.

The walk up is the real question. Ours was fifteen minutes uphill from where the car dropped us, fine with a headlamp but I would not have wanted to do it in rain. Ask the host exactly how far from the road before you book, and whether they come meet you with a motorbike for your bags. Most do if you ask.

Replying to SlowTravelSara @SlowTravelSara Good call on asking about the road. How did you find your place, was it through Booking or did you message them direct? I keep seeing valley view places that look amazing in photos but I do not trust the walk descriptions.
Paid the premium for a valley view place in Ta Van last October. First morning: total whiteout, could not see ten meters. Second morning: clear, and I just sat on the balcony for two hours not touching my phone. So it is a lottery ticket. My advice: book the view place but only for one or two nights, not the whole stay. Limits the damage if the fog wins.
