Doing a 2 day trek around Sapa in November, sleeping in a homestay in Ta Van. I have decent sneakers with good grip but they are not waterproof. The tour company says trekking shoes recommended, which honestly sounds like something they say to everyone.
How muddy are the trails in November really? Anyone done it in sneakers and been fine, or is this a guaranteed regret? I do not want to buy proper hiking shoes for one trek, but I also do not want to slide down a rice terrace on day one.
If sneakers are a no, is there anywhere in Sapa town to rent or buy cheap boots? Rather than lugging shoes halfway around the world.

Did the Ta Van trek last November in trail runners and it was fine. The red clay gets slick when it rains though, and it rained on our second day. Regular running shoes with decent tread will get you through, but bring a plastic bag to wrap them in your pack because they will be caked. The people who suffered were the ones in flat fashion sneakers.

Replying to TrailBlazerMike @TrailBlazerMike Mine are proper running shoes, tread is decent but not deep. Plastic bag trick noted. Did you ever wish you had waterproof ones, or was it manageable?

Replying to Gate88 @Gate88 Only on the rainy morning, wet feet for 4 hours is miserable. Honestly the move is buying the cheap rain shoe covers in Sapa town, they sell them on every corner for like 50k. Way lighter than carrying boots around the world for one trek.
