I will have three full days in Hoi An next month and I keep seeing half day tours to My Son sanctuary in every hotel lobby. It is the old Cham temple complex, right? About an hour inland.
Honestly I am torn. The photos look interesting but I have also read that a lot of it was damaged and what is left is fairly small. For those who went: was it worth half a day, or would I be happier spending that time on a second day wandering the old town and the beach?
Also the heat question. I assume you have to go early morning because it is inland and exposed. Do the group tours actually leave at 5am or is that just marketing? And is a private driver a better move than a tour bus here?
If it matters, I like history but I get bored fast if it is just looking at ruins with no context.

Went in March. It depends on how much you like ruins honestly. It is smaller than you expect, two hours is plenty, but the brick towers are beautiful up close and the setting in the valley is lovely. Go early though. We left Hoi An at 5:30 and were back by 11, before the heat got brutal.

Thanks, 5:30 sounds painful but worth it if it beats the heat. Did you do a group tour or a private driver? The hotel quoted me 600k for a private car and I cannot tell if that is reasonable.

That is about right for a private car. We paid 550k in March. The group tours were around 300k per person, so private is better value if there are two of you, and you control the schedule.
