Overnight train from Hanoi to Hue, is it actually comfortable?

My husband and I are planning our first Vietnam trip for December and I keep going back and forth between flying Hanoi to Hue or taking the overnight train. The train sounds romantic and saves a hotel night, but I am a light sleeper and I keep picturing myself awake at 3am staring at the ceiling of a rattling cabin.

For anyone who has done it: is the 2-berth cabin worth the extra money over the 4-berth? We would be sharing with strangers in a 4-berth and I am not sure how I feel about that. Also, how are the bathrooms by the end of the ride? Clean enough or bring your own supplies?

And one practical thing, where did you book? I have seen Baolau and 12Go mentioned a lot. Do the tickets sell out far ahead in December or can we book a week before? Any advice appreciated, I really want the train to work but I need honest opinions.
