We only have one full day in Ninh Binh and can realistically do one boat ride. I keep going back and forth between Trang An and Tam Coc.
From what I read, Trang An is the UNESCO one with the caves and temples, Tam Coc is the quieter rice paddy route. Is one clearly better, or does it depend on the season? We will be there in late November.
Also practical question: do the boats leave at fixed times or can you just show up and hop on? Trying to plan the rest of the day around it.

I will make the case for Tam Coc if you go in the right season. We went in late May when the rice fields along the Ngo Dong river were bright green, the whole ride looked unreal. Trang An is grander though, so it depends what mood you are in.
Did both in March. Trang An felt more dramatic, the ride is longer and goes through actual caves, not just under cliffs. Tam Coc is closer to town and easier to fit into a day, but the town end of the river is pretty built up now. If you only pick one, Trang An. If you have two days, do both and decide for yourself.

Trang An it is then. Do you need to book the boat tickets in advance or can you just turn up? And is morning or afternoon better for the light in the caves?
