Planning the Ha Giang loop for late October and I keep going back and forth on easy rider vs renting my own bike. Problem is I have basically zero motorbike experience. Rode a scooter once in Thailand three years ago for about twenty minutes and nearly put it in a ditch.
Part of me thinks going slow and careful could work, the roads look empty in most photos. The other part thinks mountain passes plus trucks plus my skill level equals a bad story. For people who did it, how technical are the roads really? And what is the deal with licenses, I keep reading you need a Vietnamese license or an IDP with the A stamp and there are police checkpoints.
Easy rider costs a fair bit more but showing up in one piece has its appeal. Be honest with me.

Easy rider is the way to go if you have zero experience. I did it last year and the driver knew exactly which passes were sketchy after rain.

Okay you have convinced me, easy rider it is. Roughly what did you pay per day? And did your driver speak enough English to actually chat, or is it mostly hand signals and smiles?
