First trip to Vietnam, staying 4 nights in Hanoi in November. I want to be walkable to everything but I’ve also heard the Old Quarter never sleeps, literally.
Is there a sweet spot? Close enough to wander to Hoan Kiem lake but quiet enough to actually sleep? Or should I just accept the noise as part of the experience?
Budget is mid range, around 40 to 60 dollars a night.

Stayed near Hang Bac street last month and it was perfect. Quiet enough to sleep but 2 minutes walk to everything. Avoid the streets right next to the beer corner if you are a light sleeper though.
Stayed near Hang Bac street last November, 5 minutes walk to the lake but our room faced the inner courtyard so it was quiet. The trick is to ask for a room NOT facing the street, and avoid the beer corner area around Ta Hien if you want sleep. Honestly the noise is part of the charm for a few nights, bring earplugs as backup.

Good tip about the courtyard rooms, I would not have thought to ask. Do you remember which hotel you stayed on Hang Bac? I am looking at a few around there and the reviews all say different things about the noise.

Replying to Jean-Baptiste Moretti @Jean-Baptiste Moretti Honestly I cannot remember the exact name, it was a small family-run place I found on Agoda. The trick worked though: I messaged them after booking and asked specifically for a room facing the inner courtyard, not the street. Made all the difference. Any hotel on Hang Bac will do the same if you ask before you arrive.
