This is my third time in Vietnam, although the last few times were pre-Covid. I always stick to Vietnamese food, predominantly from street food vendors and I have never been sick so I thought I’d share some food advice as I see questions about this all the time:Street food is the best (and cheapest!) way of eating. There’s nothing to be scared of, just choose places with queues of locals and you’re all good 😊The ice is fine – nobody wants to make anyone poorly, you’ll be able to tell the places with bad hygiene practices from how busy they are (as above). Same for washing of vegetables and salads. Don’t drink from the taps though, bottled water is still necessary!Sanitise your hands before eating. And use a lime to clean chopsticks before using them.Try the local delicacies wherever you go, they’re delicacies for a reason – for example, bun cha in Saigon doesn’t hit the same as it does in Hanoi. It’s’s worth researching what each area is famous for, you won’t be disappointed!

I have had food poisoning the first 2 times in vietnam eating street food. That is not very inexpensive at all when you count lost vacation days. The last two times where we have only been eating at reputable restaurant there has been no problems at all. So you mileage may vary.
Honestly I’ve been to Bali 14 times and Thailand 8 times and live on the local / street food whilst over there.

Your reasoning is faulty and your deductions are based on nothing except your personal good luck. The fact that locals eat wherever you eat only means it’s cheap or maybe it’s good, but not that it’s sanitary. They wash their dishes and pans in the most disgusting water and there they sit collecting street dirt, insect defecations and much else until tomorrow. Some people dont succumb to food poisoning in most cases. Its just dumb luck.
