Heading to HCM on the 20th for a couple of weeks travelling up to Hanoi. All paid for except meals which will be a mix of hotels/restaurants and street. Trying to figure out how much cash to take. Is it correct to assume hotels/restaurants will mostly take card payments so only need cash for street in which case VND preferred to USD?

You’re going during the middle of Tet so prices will be a lot higher with the employee shortage since most ppl go home to be with their families
there are ATMs all over the place
Loads of gold shops that gave good exchange rates.
Download Moreta Pay App. Don’t rely on your ATM card to work.
We paid card in most places , withdrew cash from atm for street food taxi’s , was told you could exchange at gold shops but if I’m honest I never really noticed many exchange places
Cash and card is both accepted in restaurants and hotels.
We usually budget 50 USD or 1M VND per day for 2 persons.
In Vietnam we use VND for most of transactions, not USD like Cambodia.
You could try this.
