It will be our first time in Vietnam this May. Is it better to get the services of a travel agency for a private tour or do I just create our own itinerary? I will be travelling with my senior mother

If you’re travelling with someone who potentially needs more comfort than, say, backpackers, you’re far better off booking tours, imo. Choose a reputable company and it takes away a lot of the worry & uncertainty of travelling in a foreign country. Plus you spend less time worrying about being scammed. A good tour company leaves you free to enjoy the holiday especially if someone is not quite so adventurous and, if something does go wrong, you have back up/support. We went with Scenic Tours. They got us into lots of places that other tourists just don’t get to or, if they do, we didn’t see them. They also organised tickets, transfers, flights, carted around all our luggage & day packs around for us and provided us with umbrellas, sunburn cream, 4 star public toilets, etc. Sure, you’re always going to end up paying for stuff you don’t want to do or don’t eat, etc but, in the long run, you may not ever go back there again, so you may was well pull out all the stops.l
For a first trip to Vietnam, you can absolutely plan it yourself, but since you’re traveling with your senior mother, a private tour or at least private transfers can make things much easier. The heat, traffic, and longer travel days can be tiring, so having flexibility, shorter drives, and hotels in good locations really matters. A mix works well too – plan the highlights yourself, but use local help for transport and day trips.
It depends on u. But its very easy to travel on your own. Download grab for taxi.

If with your senior mother, we would highly recommend to use travel agency services for safety, convenience and time saving. Central Vietnam with Danang, Hoian and Hue will be the best fit for family retreat. Hope you both will have a good time in Vietnam 😊.
Do your own. You will get plenty of recommendations of good reliable drivers on here to use as f you want
I would recommend you do it on our own. It’s easy, you need cash + card/apple pay, google map, google translate, grab/xanh sm (a bit cheaper). List the major cities you want to visit then plan from there
