   Stay on Cat Ba and do a day cruise or overnight from there. Lan Ha Bay is right next door. You’ll see and do the same things but with fewer boats and people around. Then you can explore Cat Ba afterward. We saw the Tulip ship today in Lan Ha. Very nice boat but expensive and on the same water as us.

   We took an 8 hour tour through Halong Bay to Lan Ha bay. We passed by plenty of boats in the water, but most of them were overnight boats floating peacefully in the various bays. We never heard any noise coming from any of them, and they did not detract from our trip at all. We were basically all alone when we did stop for activities. I recommend paying a little extra for a more exclusive experience. We booked Jade Sails for $100/pp, and there were only 19 people on the boat, with excellent service and a great lunch buffet.
