travel by bus in Vietnam – Hanoi Forum

I am looking into taking bus sleeper to get to Da Nang from Ha Noi. but in the ticket description it says that you can bring only one piece of luggage of 20 kilos. my luggage is 23 and I have carry on. Did anybody have the experience traveling with two pieces of luggage on the bus? please, advise

There have been a few bus crashes, but there are thousands of trips every day.

It’s sometimes feels like every bus is going to crash, it’s not. Road travel in Vietnam is not the safest, but millions do it every day.

I’ve seen a train wreck that killed over a hundred people. It means very little statistically.

    To our original poster,

There has been vehement disagreement in this forum regarding overnight sleeper buses in Vietnam over the years.

Here is my opinion based on 10+ years of riding overnight buses between Hanoi and Hue:

I would politely and respectfully disagree with those who believe the overnight buses are dangerous.

I have at least a dozen, maybe 15 round trips between Hanoi and Hue, and never once did I feel unsafe riding the bus.

The roads between Hanoi and Hue are generally level, smooth, and reasonably safe in my opinion.

That being said, it has been a few years since I took this route, and you would be wise to try to connect with someone who has ridden recently.

Also, the ONLY overnight route I can attest to is between Hanoi and Hue.

    Thanks.

The day buses can pretty dodgy with drivers playing chicken with oncoming vehicles. I saw the result of one once, there was not much left of the bus and many bodies on the roadside.

    Why not take the train?

Nobody is going to check the weight of your luggage but ( as you’ve already been told) Vietnamese night buses are a definite death trap in the case of an accident.

Do yourself a favour and take the train.
