My current schedule is detailed below. I’m debating whether to dedicate Day 3 to Tam Coc instead of Hanoi. If I make this change, I would only have one complete day in Hanoi, one Hanoi evening, and about six hours in Hanoi during the day before my flight home. What are your opinions on this adjustment?
Day 1 – Landing in Hanoi at 6 PM
Day 2 – Entire day exploring Hanoi
Day 3 – Entire day exploring Hanoi
Day 4 – Depart Hanoi in the morning > Travel to Tam Coc
Day 5 – Depart Tam Coc in the morning, Ha Long Bay Cruise
Day 6 – Return to Hanoi approximately 2 PM. Take a taxi at 8 PM for the flight out of Hanoi.

Yeah din we ended up switching it like you suggested. A lot of cruise companies do not arrange transfers from tam coc, so we would have had to book an indirect transfer at our own risk .
And decided to add the day to tam coc . Seems like a nice place to just relax and rent a scooter .
Tam Coc is beautiful. If you want to do a float trip then allow that extra day.

I would do a reverse way Hanoi- Halong Bay- Ninh Binh- Hanoi.
