Hello everyone,
Throughout my previous trips, I’ve managed to visit almost all the mainstream tourist destinations across the country. Please review the list below and suggest some fresh recommendations, keeping in mind the following criteria: I will be traveling solo, on a tight budget with a small backpack, and without a scooter. I enjoy utilizing public transport, I love the ocean and nature, and I prefer locations offering affordable and diverse food options. They absolutely do not need to be tourist hotspots. Out of the places I’ve already seen, I plan to return to Nha Trang for a beach break, maybe exploring surrounding areas along with some new spots elsewhere in the country?
- North – Hanoi, Cat Ba, Ninh Binh, Mai Chau
- Central – Phong Nha, Hue, Danang, Hoi An
- South – Saigon, Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Dalat, Can Tho, Phu Quoc

In the north, you can consider Sapa, Ha Giang, Mu Cang Chai & Mekong Delta in southern part as the recommendation above

Cao Bằng City.
Nothing touristy about it.
It’s small and compact. Lots of typical local style restaurants in a walkable area.
You can take the number three or seven public bus to Ban Gioc Waterfall. Sleep near the falls or return to the city on the same day.
You can work in Angel Eye (God’s Eye) Mountain at the same time.
There is a busy buffalo market north of Angel Eye, on the same road, just to the south of “Trà Lĩnh International Border Gate.”
It’s held every four days, ( better you fact check with the locals).

Pac Bo Caves is easy to DIY from Cao Bang City by a combination of public bus and taxi:
You can literally follow the footsteps of Ho Chi Minh when he walked across the border and returned to Vietnam from China.

The Delta Area. Ideal for slow travel. No major sites but lots of interesting towns that you can linger in.
I’ll be spending my 40 days cycling round the Delta in January, not my first visit.
I’ve had many trips and cycled all over the country, now I’m more inclined to stay longer in pleasant usually non tourist towns and soak up the local atmosphere. After all, Vietnam isn’t a very big country.
