I’m planning a travel to Vietnam with my elderly parents and would be staying in Ninh Binh for two days. We’re four of us, so would need a cab to move around. Do you suggest hiring a car for sightseeing for two days, or if we take Grab as and when required, it will suffice? I don’t want to spend a bomb in transport unnecessarily, and cycling and scooter are not options to get around because of parents.

We stayed in Tam Coc for three nights in April and used Grab to travel around. From our accommodation to Nimh Binh was around around £1.20 and to Trang A was around £5. There didn’t seem to be many grabs in the area as we had the same driver a few times! The only time we couldn’t get one is when we were travelling back to Hanoi, so hadn’t realised it was Vietnamese holiday! Reception staff in our lovely hotel Tam Coc Lion King managed to get us a taxi that was actually less than the Grab that we had taken from Hanoi to Tam Coc! Tam Coc is a lovely place
I would definitely recommend a Grab. Service is good and straightforward. Tours are pricey these days. If there’s a few of you, it can get quite expensive.
Thank you so much for asking this question! I have been wondering the same thing. We are staying three days so we DON’T have to pack everything into one day because we are older and slower. Our accommodations were able to provide tours from their location but not transportation.
We travelled to Ninh Binh with kids. We were going to hire a private driver all day but then realised we pnly wanted to visit 2 spots and we would want to come back to our hotel in between, spend some time at its pool at midday, go for lunch, spend 2 hrs on a boat etc so we really didn’t need or want a driver all day. We decided on grab and it worked out well.
I think it depends on how many sights you are trying to pack into one day.
Hard to say, without knowing what sights you are wanting to see.
And you have not stated where you are staying; are you staying in Tam Coc?
Some sights are in + very close to Tam Coc and can easily be done by Grab.
Some are a little further out and can be combined into a tour.
Anyhow, you could do a tour one day and Grab the next.
If you decide to do a tour; Toan is an excellent local guide. He can help you decide which places to group together as a tour.
