Visiting Vietnam again for around one month. Has anyone been asked for proof of onward travel either by departure airline or arrival into Vietnam. Flying into Danang. I don’t have departure dates or plans as yet. Thanks

Just an update for UK passport visa free travel and POOT.
My son flew with Qatar Airways from London via Doha To Hanoi (on a one-way ticket) and was asked at check-in for POOT. He had luckily read up on it previously and had booked a bus ticket from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh ahead of his flight. The check-in staff wanted to see his booking confirmation and took the details to enter on their system.
POOT is not required fot entry on a visa, but Immigration Officers can ask anyone for proof of onward travel, of having sufficient funds, of confirmed accommodation. They might think someone is a risk of overstaying, or working illegally. Don’t look like a derelict.
A cheap online bus ticket to Cambodia isn’t much of a hassle.
3 trips to Vietnam on UK passport,
Not been asked for POOT by the airline flying me there since my 1st 2 trips in 2019 & 2020 (Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok Airways from Bangkok). Both times I already had a visa before travelling, as well as POOT
In Jan 2025, wasn’t asked for POOT by Air Asia out of KL again, but UK travellers now have 45 day visa exemption in place.
Obviously my experiences are irrelevant to whether you may be asked for POOT or not 🙂
Vietnamese immigration has never requested Proof of Onward Travel (POOT); however, the departing airline frequently has.
When entering Vietnam under the Visa Exemption program, AirAsia (flying from Kuala Lumpur and Don Mueang/DMK) requested POOT every single time, a check they omitted when I traveled on a tourist visa. Similarly, every airline I used in India asked for POOT, even when I possessed a valid visa. While I fully grasp that POOT is officially not mandatory for visa holders, possessing a Plan B is highly advisable, particularly when departing from India to Vietnam. Canadian passport. Two visits to Vietnam past 1 and 1/2 years. Have not been asked for POOT. To be safe, why not purchase, online, a bus ticket to Laos (visa on arrival available there at least in 2024 and I have no newer info).
I’m UK so no visa needed. Entered twice since this bonus, DaNang and Hanoi and not asked for any proof (exit, flight, cash, hotel).
Assuming that you are an AUS passport holder and will enter Vietnam with an e-visa:
Vietnam does NOT have a POOT requirement for visa holders.
